Neutering campaign March 2026
Neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the suffering of street animals in the long term. Campaigns like this are made possible by donations.

02The result
Four days that change a lot.
143animals neutered in just 4 days
- 121cats
- 22dogs
- 4days of neutering campaign
From 9 to 12 March 2026, dogs and cats were neutered free of charge in cooperation with Tajdo and Zanzibar Animal Care. At the same time the animals received basic medical treatment, for local pet owners and street animals alike.
03What one neutering achieves
Hundreds fewer animals born on the streets.
≈ 550fewer kittens and puppies in the first year alone
- ≈ 480fewer kittens a year
- ≈ 66fewer puppies a year
- 2 to 3litters a year a cat can have
A cat can have kittens two to three times a year, with four kittens per litter on average. A female dog usually has around six puppies once or twice a year.
How we calculated: assuming about half of the 121 cats and 22 dogs were female, and conservatively two litters per cat and one per dog, around 480 fewer kittens and 66 fewer puppies are born in the first year alone. And because the offspring would have young of their own, the difference keeps growing every year.
04Why neutering?
Less suffering, in the long run.
On Zanzibar a great many cats and dogs live on the streets, without care and without a home. Without neutering they multiply uncontrollably, because cats and dogs can have offspring several times a year. With every litter, the number of animals living sick, hungry or injured on the streets grows.
Neutering tackles the cause. Every neutered animal means fewer young born on the streets. That is how suffering can be reduced in the long term, instead of only treating its consequences.

07What comes next
The next campaign should reach even more animals.
In future neutering campaigns we want to reach even more cats and dogs and sustainably reduce uncontrolled breeding.
Campaigns like this are only possible through donations. Every contribution helps plan the next one.
