Not a classic working stay: you go on holiday on Zanzibar, explore the island, stay at a hotel and help out at the shelter in the mornings or whenever it suits. Your trip becomes something that lasts, for you and for the animals.
02A morning at the shelter
What you can do as a volunteer.
What needs doing depends on the day, the animals and your experience. Typical tasks:
- Helping with the cleaning in the morning
- Preparing food
- Caring for the cats
- Playing with the cats
- Looking after the dogs
- Taking the dogs for walks
- Stroking and keeping the animals busy
- Supporting the team during veterinary care
- Lending a hand around the shelter

Supporting is not treating.
Support
Holding and calming animals, passing materials, being there after a treatment: every helping hand can do this, guided by the team.
Veterinary treatment
Examinations, medication and procedures are carried out by the vets on site only. If you have veterinary training, please discuss your role with us in advance.
04How it started
Maren, our first volunteer.
Maren was the shelter's very first volunteer. The volunteer programme began with her.
Since then we know: a few hours in the morning change a lot. For the animals, for the team on site and for the people who fly home with these memories.
